Diana Heller's students are member's of the Keyboard Minors Jr. Music Club and have many opportunities to share their music with others at frequent Master Classes, Recitals, Evaluations and Competitions. They participate in the best musical experiences South Florida has to offer.
Florida Federation of Music Clubs Jr. Festival (FFMC)
This is an evaluation held at Broward College in Davie the 4th weekend of January and the 1st weekend of February for students at all levels. The students perform before two judges and receive written evaluations of their playing, as well as a beautiful certificate and a chance to earn gold cups for every three years of participation. The overall performance is given one of five ratings from Fair to Superior, and those receiving a Superior rating are then eligible to compete at the State Junior Convention which is held on the first weekend of May at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. There are many events that each student may enter, such as Piano Solo, Concerto, Duet, Duo, Trio, Quartet, Hymns, Sight Play and Patriotic. Students love the experience and consider it the high point of their musical year. Florida is one of only a few states that host State Competitions and the event draws several thousand student competitors from all around the state each year.
MISSION OF THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF MUSIC CLUBS
The mission of the Federation is to support and develop American music and musicians. The NFMC Festivals Program is designed to promote study, stimulate interest in American and world music literature, and encourage each participant to reach a high standard of musical achievement. The National Federation of Music Clubs is a tax exempt, nonprofit philanthropic and educational organization dedicated to music education and promotion of the creative and performing arts in America since 1898. The Federation was designated on the Official Roster of the United Nations in 1949 as the only music organization thus accredited as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and was chartered by the U.S. Congress on August 9, 1982.
Florida State Music Teacher's Association (FSMTA) - District Student Day
At the core of each student's music education is the FSMTA Student Day, which is an extensive instruction and evaluation for students of all levels and covers performance, keyboard skills, aural theory and written theory. This evaluation is an excellent indicator of progress in total musicianship and offers 12 Levels of instruction. The aural and written theory segments of the exam are given in November, and the performance and keyboard skills are evaluated in the Spring. The student receives comments from the judges as well as a handsome certificate to display proudly. Those students achieving Honors in all four areas are invited to perform at the Student Day Honors Recital.
FLORIDA STATE MUSIC TEACHER'S ASSOCIATION
FSMTA is one of the largest and most active state chapters of Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA), the not-for-profit national organization of music teachers of all instruments. It is the oldest professional music association in the country. Since 1876, MTNA has been the foremost leader in empowering the music-teaching professional by providing valuable resources and networking opportunities for its members. FSMTA members are engaged in one of the noblest professions: the teaching of fine music to students from their earliest years through college, conservatory and beyond.
Many FSMTA students go on to become professional musicians, enriching the orchestras, opera companies, schools and colleges throughout the country. Those who compete at an international level have been extraordinary good will ambassadors for American culture. All FSMTA students though, are winners, and their diligence and hard work bring joy not only to themselves, but to countless others in their communities. Many students have discovered this during hours of volunteering their musical skills for local charities, churches, retirement homes, etc.
Pompano Beach Piano Competition
The City of Pompano Beach and The Broward County Music Teachers' Association have combined efforts since 1994 to host the Annual Pompano Beach Piano Competition. The competition is open to students of any teacher who lives in Broward County or to any student residing in Broward County. The competition awards 3 beautiful trophies with cash prizes and 3 Honorable Mention Ribbons as well as a televised performance. Students also receive judge's comments and suggestions as well as a commemorative tee shirt.
Since 2003 fourteen of Diana Heller's students have been awarded 12 Honorable Mention Ribbons and
2 Trophies in the competition.
STUDIO MASTER CLASSES
There are from four to six Master Classes held through the year at various student homes. Performing at these events is a step up from the private lesson as each student performs for the other students and one parent from each family in the studio. The Master Class is instructional as we discuss stage presence, how to bow, and many details of a successful performance. It is not as formal as our two Recitals, held in January and May. Master Classes and Recitals are scheduled just before major performance events to prepare students for successful evaluations. By the time they have performed in Master Class and Recital, the jitters are well under control for the judges.
